Eleggua 03:07

about

Following in the wake of Daymé Arocena’s much-lauded Cuban opus Cubafonía, released on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood imprint last year, the Havana-based artist announces a new bumper-pack of mixes. Reimagining album track ‘Eleggua’, the original is an ode to Santería’s god of the crossroads, combining sacred Afro-Cuban rhythms with horns-driven, steady grooving jazz. These new mixes arrive as the 24-year-old singer and bandleader is set to embark on a run of dates in the USA.

Hyperdub- and True Panther-affiliated Ossie delivers a straight up club flip (with vocal and dub mixes), beefing up the rhythm section and tilting the Afro-Cuban rhythm in a UK funky direction. Following their recent LP collaborating with Cuban artist Ache Meyi, Soundspecies have put a bruk-styled spin on things, swirling rhodes and synth around Daymé’s vocals. Finally, Highlife and Huntleys + Palmers-affiliated Esa takes the most esoteric angle – a slow-build, synths-and-bleeps chugger, Daymé’s distinctive exaltations are the track’s driving force.
